Badulla is a main administrative city in the Uva province of Sri Lanka and also a major travel and tourist destination. Also, an ideal place to visit and explore the beautiful island of Sri Lanka. It stands in the lower central hills of the country and is surrounded by the Badulu-Oya River.

The city of Badulla lies 230 Km (140 mi) from Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka. Furthermore, fascinating waterfalls, lush green tea gardens, and scenic village roads increase the natural beauty of Badulla. It had become a regional hub during the British rule. Also served as a transportation hub in Uva Province. This transportation hub was used to transport tea products by the upcountry railway line to Colombo. The city of Badulla stands on, 670 m above sea level and has a tropical climate. However, the city has a higher level of rainfall throughout the year. The average annual temperature in Kandy is 23.2 °C | 73.8 °F., while the annual rainfall is about 1885 mm | 74.2 inches per year.

When to go

There is no exact time period to travel to Badulla because there are many interesting places to visit throughout this beautiful tourist destination. Muthiyangana Buddhist Temple is one of the most sacred shrines in Sri Lanka which belongs to the sixteen sacred shrines. It has a great history that people believe that Lord Buddha had visited here on his visit to Sri Lanka. It is more popular, especially among the believers of Buddhism and it has a great stupa which is 65 feet high, namely Muthiyangana Stupa.

2. Kataragama Devalaya

This ancient shrine is known as Kataragama Devalaya as it was dedicated to the Buddhist guardian deity Kataragama Deviyo. It is one of the historically important shrines in Badulla which is worth having a visit. There is a belief that the regional King Vimaladharmasuriya the First has built this shrine. The Shrine has an image house inside the temple which is the most venerated place of the shrine. The shrine is an ideal place to explore ancient history and culture for those who have a keen interest in exploring the history of various religions.

3. Dunhinda Falls

Dunhinda Falls is an amazing waterfall in Badulla, which increases its natural beauty while attracting more visitors. It is about 64 m in height. 7. Demodara Railway Station

Demodara Railway Station is a small train station that has plenty of fascinating views of natural beauty. About 1km away from Badulla-Bandarawela main road and it is about 9 Km from the famous Nine Arches Bridge via the Bandarawela- Badulla road. The station is the final destination of the most famous “Demodara Loop”. Picturesque scenes from a peaceful and calm environment attract more visitors to this place.

8. Dhowa Rock Temple

Dhowa Rock Temple is also known as the Dowa Raja Maha Viharaya which stands in the village called Dhowa. The village lies on the Badulla-Bandarawela main road. It is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Badulla. Temple has a great religious heritage along with a great history. The shrine consists of plenty of colorful paintings and beautiful sculptures that were influenced by the art of the Kandyan era. There is also a cave and a tunnel that has a historical value and there is a belief that King Walagamba has used this tunnel to protect from foreign invasions. However, nowadays no one is permitted to enter the tunnel.
