About Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa located in the North-central Province is an ancient city that was home to Sri Lanka’s second Kingdom. It was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the downfall of Anuradhapura in 993. Polonnaruwa city is among the world heritage sites of UNESCO. Also, it is one of the most amazing historical and archeological sites in Sri Lanka.

The ancient city is a re-establishment of King Vijayabahu I. He defeated the Chola invaders to reunite the country. However, the kingdom received its brightest era during the reign of King Parakramabahu. During his reign trade and agriculture flourished under the patronage of the king. There are a lot of colossal buildings, spectacular parks, huge reservoirs, and tanks that belong to his reign. You will able to see the remains of all these marvelous constructions at present times.

There is a vast number of attractive places in and around Polonnaruwa. Parakrama Samudra or the ‘sea of Parakrama’ is one of the greatest manmade colossal reservoirs lying over 5000 acres of land.  This reservoir built by King Parakramabahu 1 connects with several tanks such as Topa Wewa, and Eramudu Wewa.

The structural technique of the Polonnaruwa period is the same as those of Anuradhapura. However, the difference is, that there was greater use of lime mortar, which was used to build brick structures of dimensions. That method was never before attempted. However, Polonnaruwa was abandoned in the 13th century. At present, it is a favorite travel destination among many heritage lovers around the world.
