Yala National Park is best known for its remarkable variety of wildlife, particularly its leopard population, which is the highest concentration of leopards in the world. These majestic big cats are the park’s top attraction, but Yala offers so much more. Whether it’s a thrilling encounter with a leopard, observing the graceful Sri Lankan elephants, or watching flocks of vibrant birds, a safari at Yala is truly a one-of-a-kind experience.
To make the most of your Yala National Park safari, it’s essential to time your visit when the wildlife is most active. The ideal times for a safari are early in the morning between 5:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. or in the late afternoon between 2:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. These are the golden hours when the animals are easier to spot as they venture out in search of food or water. By choosing the right time for your safari, you’ll enhance your chances of encountering Yala’s most sought-after species, particularly the elusive leopards.
When it comes to exploring the vast terrain of Yala, there’s no better way than a Yala National Park jeep safari. Our well-maintained jeeps, guided by experienced drivers and naturalists, will take you deep into the heart of the park, navigating through forests, grasslands, and waterholes. The open jeep design ensures unobstructed views of the wildlife, giving you the best opportunity to capture memorable photos and enjoy an immersive experience. Your guide will share fascinating insights about the park’s ecosystem, animal behavior, and the unique flora and fauna that thrive in Yala.
Yala’s wildlife diversity is simply extraordinary. The park is home to 32 species of mammals, including elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, spotted deer, wild boar, and, of course, leopards. It’s a paradise for bird watchers too, with over 125 species of birds, both resident and migratory. You’ll spot vibrant peacocks, eagles, kingfishers, and storks as they make their homes in Yala’s wetlands and lagoons. For those lucky enough, you may even witness some rare sightings of animals such as the black-necked stork or the endangered fishing cat.
Located approximately 300 kilometers from Colombo, Yala National Park is easily accessible, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. The park is divided into five blocks, with two blocks currently open to the public. Each block offers a unique safari experience, with varied landscapes that range from dense jungles to open grasslands, providing ideal habitats for different species. Block 1 is particularly famous for leopard sightings, while Block 2 offers more isolated and rugged terrain.

This safari leaving from Tissamaharama in the afternoon to the Yala National Park was really good although a bit overcrowd in some places with all the other tourists going at same time.
we saw elephants, leopard, spotted deer, water buffalo, crocodiles, peacocks, turtle, birds of all kinds, wild boar and monkeys.
This was my first visit to Sri Lanka and my first safari. Really enjoyable and our safari guide Sanjaya were friendly and helpful with very good English. Was a really great afternoon.
A trip to Yala is worth not only to see the wild animals but to notice the Dry Zone authentic plants. The way the bushes and trees grow is a peace of Art if one clearly look at the trees.
This park is extremely interesting. Yala national park is one of the best safari parks to visit Elephants, Leopard, Bear, Crocodiles, Wild boar, Peacocks, Deer, Birds, and many more animals. You can visit the morning or evening tour, We just did morning safari and we could see many animals. It was completely worth and our tour guide Sanjaya was very friendly and professional.
We also felt very safe in the area although some people don’t want to come because of the attacks. But these people are so kind and willing to help, and they really need us to help them because the tourism is so short now and it is not fair because we’ve been traveling here with no problems the whole time.
