Jaffna is a Peninsula situated in Jaffna district in the northern province of Sri Lanka and it is the 12th most populous city in Sri Lanka. Before the Sri Lankan Civil War, it was the second most populous city after Colombo. It was reconstructed after the civil war in 2009.

History says that this peninsula was a colonial port city by the Portuguese and again by the Dutch in the 17th century and again in the 18th century. 85% of the population are Hindus. And some burgers are also in this area, which is the posterity of colonial settlers. At present, there are two main occupations of people. Sea and lagoon fish farming, as the Jaffna is a peninsula, and also land cultivation like red onion and tobacco. Climate in Jaffna

There is a tropical climate in Jaffna which lies 8m above sea level. The average temperature of the year in Jaffna is 27.7◦c. March to July are the warmest months in the year with an average temperature of 31.1◦c, while May month considered the hottest period during the year. As well as November to February is the cool season of the year with an average temperature of 28.8◦c. While January is considered the coolest month of the year. The rainfall will be expected from October to December, with the highest rainfall chance in November.

Best time to visit Jaffna

Normally Jaffna is a hot climate area. January to September and December are the best periods to visit Jaffna tourist places. And the famous months for visiting Jaffna are December and January, you will have a little warm temperature and ordinary rainfall during this period.

1. Nallur Temple

Nallur temple is the most famous and attractive Hindu temple in Jaffna. The people who select Jaffna as a destination point in their tour, definitely visit this Nallur temple. This Hindu temple is devoted to Skanda/ Murugan, the god of love, war, and beauty. This temple was originally founded in 948 A.D, after that, it was rebuilt in the 13th Century. Off the coast of Jaffna is a little island called Nainatheevu, which has a great history. You have to go by boat to Nainatheevu, a small island, which is considered one of the holiest religious sites in Sri Lanka, because not only Hindus, but Buddhists believed that the Lord Buddha had called two Naga tribe rulers in order to solve their argue. It is directly related to Indian history as well.

2. Jaffna Fort

One of the famous sites in Jaffna is Fort. This was established by Portuguese Philip De Olivera in 1618, during the era captured the Jaffna by the Portuguese. This fort is famous as a fortress of our Lady of Miracles of Jafanapatao, due to various miracles ascribed to the statue of the Virgin Mary in the church inside the fort. Presently, the Fort is maintained by the Ceylon Army.

3. Jaffna Library

The most valuable and important place in Jaffna is the library, it consists of Jaffna’s whole history of many years. It was established by Alfred Duraiappah who was Mayor of Jaffna in the year 1959. During the mid of the 20th Century, the library is the biggest library in Asia. But during the civil war in 1981, it burnt completely, and after that, but not as the previous.

4. Casuarina Beach

Casuarina Beach is one of the famous beaches in Jaffna. The name Casuarina id formed due to the availability of Casuarina trees in that whole area. You can see this peninsula to this beach nicely and you have to drive almost 20 kilometers away from Jaffna. The main attraction of this beach is its white sand. You may enjoy this experience when you are visiting Jaffna.

5. Dambakola Patuna

Dambakola Patuna is a nice place that is famous among Sri Lankans as well as Indians due to its great and true history. When we run 2000 years back in history, this place has the ancient port in Sri Lanka. However according to the Mahavanshaya of Buddhists, here is the place where Sangamitta Theraniyo, the daughter of King Ashoka in India, brought the holy sapling of the Bodhi tree and was planted by the SriLankan king Devanampiyathissa. At present, this tree is considered the oldest tree in the world that has been planted by a human being.
