Feel The Soothing Wind Breeze At Beach Paradise Negombo – Sri Lanka

This beautiful beach paradise stands on the shore of a lagoon which is called “Negombo”. It is one of the major commercial hubs in the country. The city has been an important trading port for both the Dutch and the Portuguese in the years of the past. It is a beautiful seaside resort in the western part of the island of Sri Lanka. The city has a specific location with a wonderful seashore and a fascinating sea. The other reason is its centuries of the old Negombo fishing industry.

During the colonial rule of the Portuguese, the traditional Negombo coastal people who engaged in fishing and seafaring embraced Catholicism. They were known as “Karava” and previously Buddhists and Hindus. This embrace converted nearly two-thirds of Negombo into Catholics. Because of the Catholic influence, the city is famous as ‘Little Rome’. Also, the Negombo Fishing industry has played a significant role in the Seafood trade in the country in the past.

Climate:

The city lies about two meters above sea level and its geography is a mix of land and water. The Dutch canal flows in the heart of the city. The city receives rainfall mainly from the Southwestern monsoons from May to August and October to January. During the remaining months, there is little precipitation due to convective rains. The average annual precipitation is about 2400 millimeters. The average temperature varies from 24 to 30 degrees Celsius, and there are high humidity levels from February to April.

Best Time to Visit Negombo

There is no exact time period to visit this beautiful beach paradise. There are so many interesting things on the way, throughout this amazing City. But according to most of the visitor’s experiences, Christmas and Easter are good times. Because the people are mainly Christian and Catholic and celebrations for each festival are fantastic. It is already a magical time. For best weather, January and April are most likely to be dry and sunny.

What to explore in Negombo

1. Dutch Fort

There are plenty of amazing activities and things to be explored in Negombo. Among them, the Dutch influence is hard to miss in the little town of Negombo. The old Dutch Fort still stands alive in the city with a number of people living in the area. Today, it is a part of a local prison. You can easily get into the fort by walking through the main bus terminal of the city. Also, the Fort can be accessed through a hotel area as it is located near Munnakkaraya.

2. Dutch Canal

Dutch Canal is also a main tourist attraction destination in Negombo. It is famous as the Hamilton Canal which connects Puttlam to Colombo, passing through the city of Negombo. This water path is designed to drain saltwater out of the Muthurajawela wetlands.

3. Negombo Fish Market

Negombo fishing market and other weekend markets will provide you ample opportunities to experience various goods while shopping. Also, Beach Road shops are good places to hand out.

5. Negombo Lagoon Boat Safari

When it comes to Negombo it is the beach that is the center of most of the actions here. The sky above, sand below, peace within you can relax on the beach. Have an early visit to the seashore and capture the views of boats leaving to catch their fish harvest. In the evening come back and see the day’s catch. The heads and mouths will start bargaining to buy those just-opened ones from the fish market close by.

Taking a boat trip along the old Dutch Canal is another enjoyable activity that you can experience in Negombo. This will take about three hours and include sightseeing through the rainforest, mangroves, and a local farm.

6. Nightlife

Nightlife at Negombo will be an unforgettable experience as there are a number of interesting stuff on the way. You can experience the delicious street foods while walking through the busy streets under the colorful street lamps. The city has considerably influenced the colonial rules of Portuguese, Dutch, and the British. Also, a number of Arabic traders still live here. You can feel the influence of all these cultures in the cuisine and the lifestyle of people even today. So you can taste the regular continental food, Arabic food, Turkish food, Indian food, or local seafood. Also, Negombo offers a few bars located on Beach Road.

In addition to the above places, there are a number of destinations in the city to explore the beauty of Negombo. Angurukaramulla Temple is one of the significant Buddhist shrines, which is located near Harischandra College. A lot of foreign tourists as well as visitors of other religions, visit there throughout the year. The temple consists of a giant Buddha image and there are plenty of old paintings and murals inside the walls of the temple. 7. Church

St. Mary’s Church is one of the larger cathedrals in Sri Lanka. As the majority of Negombo’s population is Roman Catholic, the church is quite important. It can be a concern as the heart of Catholic devotees in the area. The architecture is majestic and the church has some nice paintings. The church is called Mahaweediya Palliya in Sinhala, due to its location on the Main Street of Negombo.
